Anxiety disorder is an umbrella term characterized by anxiety and fear. Fear is the subjective emotional responses (perceived) attached to the things or circumstances for posing imminent threat (Horwitiz, 2013), anxiety on other hand is future oriented anticipation of threat (DSM-5). Examples of fears are fears of walking in enclosed spaces or fear of height, whereas examples of anxiety are worries about tomorrow’s presentation or job interview. These two terms deliberately overlap, but have significant differences (DSM-5). The fear factor always produces autonomic arousal and fight or flight reaction while anxiety is typified by tension, apprehension and worry (Muris, 2007).
According to DSM -5, Anxiety disorders are types of disorders that share features of excessive fear and anxiety and behavioral related disturbances. Both DSM and ICD have common sharing code F40 for Anxiety Disorder. DSM 5 has arranged the types of anxiety disorder developmentally according to the typical age of onset separation anxiety being the first.
